I’ll be Speaking at the NJ SCBWI Writers’ Retreat

I’ll be speaking on Friday of  the NJ SCBWI Writers’ Retreat Oct. 1-2 on Beginnings. Here’s the information on my workshop:

A Thoughtful Approach to Beginnings

We’ll take a look at the very beginning of a novel, those first few sentences that might be all an editor or agent read before they decide to keep reading—or reject.

We’ll talk about what the first sentences of a novel should accomplish and ways to hook a reader. Then we’ll look at the different types of book beginnings, (yes, there are different types of beginnings!) with examples, and talk about what makes those examples intriguing and what types of beginnings work well with various kinds of books.

Finally, we’ll experiment with types of beginnings.

If you’re interested in attending, contact Kathy Temean at NJ SCBWI or me. (anita @ anitanolan .com) I think you can attend the Friday sessions even if you can’t make the entire retreat but haven’t gotten the details yet.

Here’s other information about the Writers’ Retreat from Kathy Temean’s blog.
