Thoughts from E PA SCBWI Retreat

I spent the past weekend at the Eastern PA SCBWI Retreat.

I heard several great speakers: Ame Dyckman, (picture book author, most recently Horrible Bear), Meg Medina, (YA author, most recently Burn, Baby, Burn), and Leila Sales, (Viking editor and author of several YA/MG novels, most recently Once was a Time).

They said several things that rang true:

Ame Dyckman: “Kid’s think it’s funny when they know something everyone else doesn’t,” and “Know your gap” (that period of time between when you were a child and an adult writing picture books when you weren’t reading them.)

Meg Medina: “It’s not till the end of the writing that you understand what you are trying to say,” and “Have an audience of one. Write for the child that you were.”

Leila Sales: “You shouldn’t be able to pull any scene from the book and have it still hold together,” and “The character must act to get what he wants.”

The retreat was at the Highlights Foundation, a long drive but great food and an accommodating staff.

As an added bonus, I got to spend time with my agent, Erzsi Deak of Hen&Ink Literary!
