In his 2013 Book Publishing Industry Predictions, Smashwords founder Mark Coker included this warning for aspiring writers: “In the self-publishing gold rush, more money will be made in author services than in book sales.”

  1. Interesting. As a self-published author myself relatively new to the market I can see how this could well be true. That said, both of my books have been free so at this point I’m not making money from my writing per se. I’m choosing not to charge until my name is out there a little more visibly. I’m certainly being rewarded in terms of the positive reviews for Uncle Flynn and George goes to Mars, and there have been loads of downloads for both. At the moment, publicity seems to be more important.
