More from the NJ SCBWI Conference

Still digesting all I heard and learned at the NJ SCBWI conference, but something I didn’t know about, and am very excited to find out, is that Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card) is apparently finally coming out as a movie!

If you haven’t read that book, it’s worth seeking out.

David Caruba mentioned it during his Sunday morning marketing keynote.

David always provides great information, and this year was no exception. He speaks to a number of editors and agents and asks for their perspective on the market.

(Note–David’s information is by no means scientific, and I wouldn’t put too much stock in some bits and pieces he mentioned due to the small number of people who participated in the survey, but the big picture items were interesting.)

A couple of things I picked up from David’s talk:

YA is still where the growth is, but MG is heating up.

Vampires etc. are–maybe–winding down. Sci Fi is on the uptick.

David even mentioned that several editors said that the Picture Book and Historical Markets are improving!

(From personal experience, it seems that David is correct about the historicals.  Yeah!)

  1. David is such a wonderful speaker and this is all SO interesting. I would never want to miss one of his talks!

  2. Thanks Anita! I appreciate the mention. It was great seeing you at the conference.

    • You too, David! You gave a great talk.
