And Still More Questions to Ask When “Dating” an Agent, Part 4

  1. How would the agent like to communicate with you—email, phone?)
  2. How quickly can you expect a response to your questions?
  3. Is there another agent or an assistant who will deal with things while the agent is on vacation?
  4. How does the agency deal with illnesses, death?
  5. What rights does the agent normally try to retain?
  6. How does the agent normally deal with rights? Do they deal with all rights? Does the agent have contacts with others who deal with foreign rights, or movie rights, etc?
  7. Does the agent have a contract, and if so, can you get a copy of it?
  8. What are the agent’s policies if you should part company—before a sale—and after?

You won’t want to ask all these questions, but pick out the ones important to you and form your questions around them. Good luck!
