If you haven’t been to NJ SCBWI events, I encourage you to. They’re great. An upcoming event, in particular, is outstanding. It’s the Toms River retreat, where 16 writers spend the weekend with 2 editors. Kathy Temean, NJ SCBWI RA and Laurie Wallmark, Assistant RA, plan all sorts of activities that get the creative juices flowing.
The draw, of course, is to spend time with a couple editors/agents, and receive feedback from them and the other attendees. I attended Toms River a couple years ago and loved it. It hasn’t fit into my schedule since, but I’m envious of those who’ll attend again this year.
The event is already sold out, but there is one thing they’ll be doing that we can all participate in, and that’s the writer’s challenge.
Kathy comes up with a prompt and everyone writes a first page for it. This year the prompt is a picture by Chris van Allsberg. Take a look at the photo on Kathy’s blog, and see what you can come up with.
